Set at the beginning of the twentieth century where Jews and Orthodox Christians live together in the little village of Anatevka in the pre-revolutionary Russia of the Czars. Among the traditions of the Jewish community, the matchmaker arranges the match and the father approves it. This is the backdrop where poor milkman Tevye and his wife of twenty five years, Golde, scratch out a living with their five daughters.
