East Durham Creates, in partnership with East Durham Trust are delighted to announce that the  Let’s Create Arts Commissioning Scheme is back for a fourth round of funding with the deadline for applications being 11.59pm on Friday 17 June 2016.

Launched in August 2015, Let’s Create was set-up to support local projects, involving artistic or creative activities that aim to increase participation in East Durham.  There have been three funding rounds to date, awarding 17 out of 26 submitted projects financial support from £500 to £2,500. This has helped local groups, venues and arts organisations test out new ideas and build on the provision that already exists in the locality.

One of the many success stories is Comunidad de Naividad, A multi cultural Latin American inspired arts event based in the Blackhall area, produced by Jack Drum Arts and Blackhall Community Association. International artists were invited to create new work for a stunning carnival style parade, including lanterns, stilt walking, costumes/puppets, new music and craft workshops. The project culminated in a large scale outdoor event, which coincided with Blackhall’s Christmas community event and actively engaged over 800 people.

As a Creative People and Places project funded by Arts Council England, East Durham Creates commissioned Let’s Create to assist in their aims to get more people engaged in arts and creative activity.  As a lead partner, East Durham Trust are well placed to manage the scheme, with their remit working to combat disadvantage in former Colliery communities, through a wide range of initiatives, from food parcels and debt management to arts on prescription.

Malcolm Fallow, Chief Executive Officer, East Durham Trust said:

“The additional round of funding is a welcome boost for the area – as the previous rounds have shown this is a great opportunity for local groups to engage people in the Arts.”

East Durham Creates is an Arts Council England-supported project, working across the East Durham area and aiming to get more people involved in arts and creative activity. We are working with residents to deliver an ambitious arts programme – every element of which will be community-led in some way, and totally distinctive to the area – inspired by East Durham the place and by the people who live there.

East Durham Creates will offer new experiences to inspire and delight. It will build on and support the vibrant existing arts activity in the area, and develop skills through the arts, helping to bring about long-term, lasting change.

The East Durham Creates team are collaborating with groups and residents to explore what the arts and creativity can offer local communities, testing out lots of different approaches to see what works (and what doesn’t) – and doing all we can to help sustain activity beyond our Arts Council England grant.
East Durham Creates is one of 21 Creative People and Places projects nationally, funded by Arts Council England. It is managed by Beamish, Forma Arts, and East Durham Trust working in partnership and supported by Durham County Council via East Durham Area Action Partnership and Culture and Sport Services. www.eastdurhamcreates.co.uk

East Durham Creates is part of the Creative People and Places programme, initiated and funded by Arts Council England. Creative People and Places is about more people taking the lead in choosing, creating and taking part in art experiences in the places where they live. There are 21 independent projects, each located in an area where people have traditionally had fewer opportunities to get involved with the arts. www.creativepeopleplaces.org.uk/

East Durham Trust is a Registered Charity with an expressed purpose to promote the regeneration of rural and urban areas of the effects of social and economic decline.

The Trust is the flagship Voluntary and Community Sector organisation for the area and as well as providing the traditional support to local Community groups and managing the local Volunteer Centre, the organisation also manages a range of projects and contracts. www.eastdurhamtrust.org.uk/
