‘IMPACT’ is a short film made by 13 young people aged 16 and 19 who took part in a BFI Network Academy programme delivered by Kids for Kids UK in partnership with East Durham College and East Durham Creates. The academy enabled local students to work with industry professionals to create a high quality short film which premiered at East Durham College on 19th March 2015.

During the course young people learned how to create a film with high end special effects from the initial concept right through to the finished edit and all had a major role to play in the production. They also organised the premiere event themselves as part of their Silver Arts Award.

The BFI Academy is a national programme for 16-19 year olds who are interested in a career in the film industry and in learning first hand all aspects of film making. For four months, the group worked with Ben Race from Newton Aycliffe-based Capture Films and animator and special effects artist Mark Jobe from Quay Animation Studios in Tyneside with the support of Laura Emerson of Jack Drum Arts on their Arts Award.

“Personally, it has developed my skills and traits such as my confidence and working in a group. Being involved has not only broadened my horizons and opportunities for me and getting into University in September, but has also created an awareness of the demands of the industry and how to deal and overcome them. It can be really stressful, but with the outcome (a film) it’s worth it.”

The film was inspired by ‘Days of Fear and Wonder’ – the BFI’s major celebration of the Sci Fi genre. The story centres around Jonathan, the sole worker on an isolated outpost called EDC 27, situated on a barren moon. His only companion is the artificial intelligence; A.D.A.M. Shot on location at East Durham College this short film combines live action with state of the art special effects to create a sci fi world far away from the coalfields of County Durham.
