Some of you may remember that a few weeks ago The Miners’ Hymns came to the North East. We took a group from Christ Church Ladies’ Group on the coach up to the Sage in Gateshead on 5th March to see the film screened alongside a live performance by members of the NASUWT Riverside Band and Iskra String Quartet, and they had a great time, describing it as “really emotional” and that it “reflects the attitudes and feelings of the times extremely well”.
Filmmaker Bill Morrison stayed afterwards to answer some questions about the film, and describes what it was like to make a highly emotive and and locally powerful piece as an outsider – if you missed it you can listen to it HERE.
Later that week the film was performed at Easington Social Welfare as part of a busy weekend of community events supported by Beamish Museum. Local banners were on display throughout the whole event and there was a real sense that the film was ‘coming home’. There were more than a few tears by the end and the performance received a standing ovation.
